The complete guide to PDF Crop Tool

Last updated June 1, 2026

Cropping a PDF page reduces visible content to a defined rectangular area — removing scanner borders, trimming white margins, zooming in on a chart, or standardizing page dimensions across a document. Convertify's Crop PDF tool lets you drag a crop box visually over a page preview and apply it to all pages or only specific ones.

Important distinction: PDF cropping sets a 'CropBox' parameter that hides the area outside the crop rectangle. The hidden content is not deleted from the file — it's masked. This means crop boxes can be 'undone' by resetting the crop box in Acrobat. If you need to permanently remove content from page edges (e.g., remove a scanner watermark), cropping achieves this visually but not data-destructively.

Step-by-step: how to use PDF Crop Tool

  1. 1

    Upload the PDF

Drop the PDF onto the upload zone. The first page renders as a preview for setting your crop area.

  2. 2

    Drag the crop rectangle

Click and drag on the page preview to draw the crop box. Fine-tune by entering exact pixel or mm values in the margin inputs.

  3. 3

    Choose scope

Apply the same crop to all pages, or switch to per-page mode to set different crops for different pages (useful for documents with mixed portrait/landscape).

  4. 4

    Crop and download

The cropped PDF downloads immediately. Open in any viewer to confirm the crop area looks as expected.

Real-world scenarios

Removing scanner border artifacts

Flatbed scanners often capture a black or gray border where the page edge meets the glass. Crop to remove these borders for clean, professional-looking PDFs.

Extracting a specific chart or table

A PDF report has one key chart on page 3. Crop that page to show only the chart area, then extract page 3 with Split PDF to get a clean, chart-only one-pager for a presentation or email.

Standardizing mixed-margin documents

A document assembled from multiple sources has inconsistent margins — some pages have 20mm margins, others 5mm. Apply a uniform crop to all pages for a visually consistent final document.

Troubleshooting and edge cases

The crop looks right in the tool but wrong when I open the downloaded PDF.

Some PDF viewers (notably older versions of Adobe Reader) ignore crop boxes in certain display modes. Try in Google Chrome's built-in PDF viewer, which consistently respects the CropBox.

I accidentally cropped too aggressively and cut off content.

Re-upload the original file — the previously downloaded file has the cropped view baked in, but the original content is still in the file data. You can re-set a wider crop box if needed. Or re-upload the original and set a less aggressive crop.

Frequently Asked Questions about Crop PDF - Secure Edge & Margin Trimming

Is the content outside the crop box actually deleted?

Yes! Unlike most online tools that just 'hide' the margins with a mask, Convertify performs a 'Data-Level Crop' that permanently removes the objects outside your selection for security.

Can I crop different pages with different dimensions?

Yes. You can apply a universal crop to all pages or switch to 'Manual Mode' to set unique crop areas for individual pages in the same file.

Does it work well for scanned documents?

Perfectly. Our tool provides an auto-guide that helps you align the crop box with the text block of scanned pages, even if the scanning was slightly tilted.

Will this reduce the file's visual quality?

No. Cropping is a vector operation that changes the 'Media Box' of the PDF. Your images and text remain at their original high resolution.
