About PDF Repair Tool

Recover contents from broken or damaged files with Convertify's 'Deep-Scan' repair engine. We reconstruct corrupted headers and cross-reference tables (XRefs) that cause files to display 'Corrupt' or 'Invalid' errors. Even if a document was partially downloaded or crashed during saving, our rebuilder attempts to salvage every page and object.

Deep-Scan Reconstruction: Rebuilds broken file headers and tables
XRef Recovery: Fixes errors that prevent PDFs from opening
Stream Salvage: Attempts to recover images from partial files

The complete guide to PDF Repair Tool

Last updated June 1, 2026

A damaged PDF — one that opens with errors, shows blank pages, or won't open at all — is usually the result of an incomplete download, file system corruption, email client truncation, or an interrupted save. Convertify's Repair PDF tool attempts to reconstruct the document's internal structure using PDF-Lib's error-tolerant parsing, recovering as much content as possible from the corrupted file.

Repair success depends on severity: minor structure errors (missing EOF markers, small cross-reference table gaps) fix completely. Severe corruption (file truncated to 20% of original size, overwritten sectors) may recover partial content — some pages but not all, or text without images. The tool always shows you how many pages were successfully recovered before download.

Step-by-step: how to use PDF Repair Tool

  1. 1

    Upload the damaged PDF

Drop the corrupted file onto the upload zone. Even files that don't open normally can be uploaded.

  2. 2

    Attempt repair

The parser reads as much of the file structure as it can recover, rebuilding missing cross-reference tables and patching structural gaps.

  3. 3

    Preview recovery result

The tool shows how many pages were recovered and a thumbnail preview. If the result looks correct, proceed to download.

  4. 4

    Download the repaired PDF

The recovered PDF downloads. For partial recoveries, some pages or images may be missing — the recovered content is complete for what was accessible.

Real-world scenarios

Incomplete email download

A PDF attached to email sometimes downloads incompletely due to mail server size limits or connection drops. The resulting file is truncated and won't open. Repair PDF can often recover the pages that downloaded successfully.

Recovered files from a failed drive

After recovering files from a failing hard drive or corrupted USB, the PDFs may have structural corruption. Repair attempts to extract as much content as possible from the recovered bytes.

PDF exported by a buggy tool

Some older or poorly-coded export tools produce PDFs with malformed internal structures — they open in Acrobat but fail in strict viewers. Repair normalizes the structure so the file opens in all compliant readers.

Troubleshooting and edge cases

Repair recovered 0 pages from my file.

The damage is too severe for automatic recovery — the core content sections of the PDF are unreadable. Options: try a professional file recovery service that works at the binary/hex level; or check if you have a cloud auto-save version (Google Drive, Dropbox versions) from before the corruption.

Some pages are blank in the repaired PDF.

Blank pages in the repaired output usually mean those page's content streams were in the damaged portion of the file. The page structure was recovered but the content data wasn't.

Frequently Asked Questions about Repair PDF - Advanced Damage Recovery

Can it fix 'File is not a valid PDF' errors?

Yes. These errors are often caused by corrupted file headers. Our tool performs a 'Deep Scan' to identify the original file structure and rewrite the binary header to make it readable again.

Will it recover images from a partial download?

If the image data exists in the file stream, our rebuilder will attempt to re-index the stream objects to salvage every possible asset from the broken file.

Is there a limit on how badly damaged a file can be?

As long as the core data hasn't been overwritten, our engine can often reconstruct the XRef table and page tree for files that standard readers simply refuse to open.

Is it safe to repair sensitive documents online?

With Convertify, yes. The repair logic runs entirely in your local browser memory. Your corrupted files are never uploaded to a server, keeping your data confidential even during recovery.
